The Process: Saw Blades & Woodworking Tools

Professional sharpening is about more than restoring a sharp edge. Proper sharpening restores cutting geometry, balance, and performance while protecting the lifespan of your tools. Below is an overview of how we sharpen and service saw blades, router bits, chisels, and other woodworking cutting tools.

Saw Blade Sharpening Process

Each saw blade begins with a full inspection to evaluate wear, carbide condition, and structural integrity. Blades that are severely warped, cracked, or worn beyond safe sharpening are documented, and a note is provided explaining why sharpening is not recommended.

Blades are first cleaned to remove pitch, resin, glue, and debris buildup. Cleaning is performed using professional-grade cleaner and a wire brush to ensure all cutting surfaces are free of contamination. Proper cleaning allows sharpening equipment to contact the carbide evenly and accurately.

Once cleaned and inspected, blades are sharpened using a Thorvie AV-40 sharpening system. This equipment allows precise adjustment of tooth geometry and sharpening angles while maintaining consistent results across every tooth.

Each blade is sharpened individually by hand, ensuring that carbide teeth are restored evenly. Only the minimum amount of material is removed during sharpening, typically just enough to restore a clean, precise cutting edge while preserving carbide life.

After sharpening, blades are rechecked for balance, tooth consistency, and overall cutting integrity.

Carbide Tip Replacement

If a blade has chipped, cracked, or missing carbide teeth, repair may still be possible. Damaged carbide tips are removed and replaced using pre-tinned carbide tips designed to match the blade’s specifications.

Carbide replacement is performed using professional brazing equipment; we use a Victor ESAB Performer torch system, which allows controlled heat and proper bonding of replacement tips. Once installed, replacement carbide is shaped and sharpened to match the blade’s original cutting geometry.

Each repaired blade is inspected again before final sharpening to ensure safe and reliable performance.

Router Bit Sharpening Process

Router bits are inspected for carbide wear, edge damage, and bearing condition (when applicable). Resin and debris buildup is removed prior to sharpening to ensure accurate edge restoration.

Carbide cutting edges are carefully sharpened using precision equipment to maintain proper cutting angles and original tool design. Maintaining factory geometry is critical for router bits, as improper sharpening can negatively affect cut quality and tool performance.

Bearings are checked for smooth rotation and may be cleaned or replaced if needed.

Chisel and Hand Tool Sharpening

Chisels and similar woodworking hand tools are evaluated for edge damage, bevel wear, and overall blade condition. Edges are restored while maintaining proper bevel angles to ensure smooth, controlled cutting performance.

Tools are sharpened and finished to produce a clean working edge suitable for professional woodworking applications.

Cleaning, Inspection, and Quality Control

Throughout the sharpening process, tools are cleaned using professional-grade solutions, like Simple Green Pro HD Cleaner, to remove oils, debris, and residue. Tools are thoroughly dried and inspected multiple times during service.

Each tool is handled by a single technician from inspection through final sharpening to maintain consistency and accountability. Tools that cannot be safely sharpened or repaired are clearly documented, and customers are notified before service is completed.

Final Packaging and Preparation

After sharpening or repair is complete, tools are prepared for safe return shipping or pickup.

Saw blades are dipped in a protective plastic coating that covers the carbide teeth and are then securely boxed. Router bits, chisels, and smaller tools are individually protected to prevent damage during transport.

Our Guarantee

All sharpening and repair work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. If a tool does not perform as expected after service, we will re-evaluate and correct the issue at no additional charge.

Mail-in sharpening is always welcome, and local customers are encouraged to drop off tools at our Shelley location or schedule pickup service when available.
