How to Pack Your Tools for Mail-In Sharpening

Shipping your woodworking tools for sharpening doesn’t have to be stressful. With proper preparation, you can help ensure your saw blades, router bits, chisels, and other cutting tools arrive safely and return ready to perform. Here’s how we recommend packing your tools for mail-in sharpening.

Start with the Order Form

Before packing anything, complete your order form with your contact information and service details. This allows us to quickly identify your tools when they arrive and contact you if we have any questions during service.

If you are a shop sending multiple tools or bulk orders, including a detailed inventory list helps ensure everything is tracked accurately throughout the sharpening process.

Wrap Each Tool Individually

Every tool should be wrapped separately to prevent damage during shipping.

Saw blades, router bits, chisels, and other cutting tools should be wrapped in cardboard, heavy paper, or protective padding. Saw blade teeth and router bit cutting edges are especially vulnerable to impact, so secure wrapping is essential.

Cardboard circles or blade guards work well for saw blades, helping protect carbide teeth and prevent movement inside the box. Router bits and smaller tools can be wrapped in paper towels, bubble wrap, or stored in protective containers if available.

Packing Bulk Shop Orders

For shops sending larger quantities of tools, organization and protection become even more important.

Multiple saw blades should be separated with cardboard or foam between each blade. Stacking blades without protection can easily chip carbide teeth during transit. For larger shipments or heavier orders, using a sturdy wood crate or reinforced box is often recommended to prevent damage and maintain structure during shipping.

Labeling groups of tools or separating them by tool type can also help speed up processing.

Box Everything Securely

Once each tool is individually wrapped:

  • Place tools into a sturdy shipping box or crate

  • Add packing material such as crumpled paper, foam, or packing peanuts to prevent movement

  • Avoid allowing metal tools to contact each other during transit

  • Close the box and gently shake it; if you hear movement, add additional padding

For smaller orders, standard shipping boxes often work well. For bulk or heavier shipments, reinforced boxes or wooden crates provide additional protection.

Consider Insurance

We recommend insuring your shipment if you are sending high-value tools or large shop orders. While we take great care once your tools arrive, we cannot be responsible for packages lost or damaged during shipping transit.

What to Expect When Your Tools Are Returned

After sharpening or repair, your tools are carefully packaged for the return trip.

Saw blade teeth are dipped in a protective rubber coating and boxed securely to prevent movement. Router bits, chisels, and smaller tools are individually protected and packaged to prevent edge damage during shipping.

Our goal is to ensure your tools arrive back to you safely, organized, and ready to return to work.
