Sharpening & Repair
Yes. We provide a professional clipper blade sharpening service for all common detachable grooming and styling blades. This includes Andis clipper blade sharpening, Oster blade sharpening, and blades from brands such as Wahl, Heiniger, Lister, and other major manufacturers.
Each blade is cleaned, inspected, sharpened, properly tensioned, and oiled before being returned. When sending blades in, please ensure they are clean and note any loose or damaged parts. Blades are returned sharp, lubricated, and ready for immediate use.
We sharpen a wide range of professional and specialty cutting tools. If you’re wondering where you can get shears sharpened, we provide a full professional sharpening service for both beauty and utility scissors.
Our services include hair-cutting scissor sharpening for barbers, stylists, and pet groomers, including straight, offset, and curved shears, as well as thinning or texturizing shears. We also offer fabric scissor sharpening services, including sewing shears, quilting scissors, and pinking shears.
In addition, we sharpen clipper blades and other specialty scissors such as leatherworking, industrial, medical, or kitchen scissors, provided the steel and edge geometry allow for proper grinding. Our primary focus is grooming and beauty shears, but if you have an unusual cutting tool, feel free to ask — we’re happy to let you know if it can be sharpened.
Yes. Thinning or texturizing shears can be professionally sharpened as part of our hairdressing scissors sharpening service. The cutting blade and teeth are carefully honed to restore smooth, controlled cutting and proper blending performance.
Thinning shears can be mailed in using our secure mail-in process or dropped off in person. After sharpening, your texturizing shears will once again produce clean, consistent results without pulling or snagging hair.
Immediately stop using a pair that has been dropped. Even a short fall can bend a tip or nick an edge. Have a backup tool on hand so you can finish your job safely. Inspect the dropped shears and look for the above mentioned abnormalities indicating they need sharpening. If there are abnormalities, send them in for sharpening and repair. Continuing to use a damaged shear will worsen the damage and shorten its life.
Yes. We offer a professional pinking shears sharpening service as well as sharpening for many serrated blades. Pinking shears are sharpened to restore clean, even fabric cuts, while serrated blades are typically sharpened on the flat side to create a fresh cutting edge.
We cannot recreate missing or broken scallops or serrations on most knives. However, we can corrugate or serrate a honed shear when appropriate for a flat $4. If you’re unsure whether your fabric or serrated scissors can be serviced, feel free to reach out and ask.
We can sharpen a large variety of blades and shears, including the following items: Mandolin blades, meat grinder plates, fabric/embroidery shears, buttonhole scissors, thread snips, pinking shears, duck bill applique scissors, lawnmower blades, pruning shears, loppers, non-electric shear-style hedge trimmers, axes/hatchets, spades/trowels, cement trowels, grafting knives, chisels, hand plane blades, carving gouges, scrapers, machetes, multi tools, pocket knives, utility knives, pet nail clippers, ice fishing auger blades, ice chippers, straight razors, hairdressing shears, nail clippers, cuticle nippers, clipper blades, moustache/beard trimmers, tin snips, trauma and bandage shears, dissection, metzenbaum and iris scissors, mayo, tenotomy scissors, surgical scissors, and dental elevators. Feel free to call if you are unsure if your item can be sharpened.
Yes, every clipper blade is fully disassembled and tension and spacing are adjusted depending on blade size.
Professional shears should cut smoothly and effortlessly. If your shears begin pushing or bending hair or fur, require extra force or repeated snips, produce uneven or ragged cuts, or make a clicking or chattering sound when opening and closing, they likely need attention.
Start by checking and properly adjusting the shear tension. Perform a test cut on hair or fur using normal hand motion. If the shears cut cleanly without catching, folding, or requiring wrist torque or added pressure, the issue may have been tension-related. If cutting still feels rough or inconsistent after proper adjustment, the blades are dull and need sharpening.
As a general guideline, professional groomers and stylists who use shears daily often require sharpening every 2–4 months, or roughly three to four times per year, depending on workload and cutting technique. Hair styling shears used less aggressively may need service slightly less often, while part-time or home use shears are typically sharpened every 6–12 months. Regardless of use level, letting shears go longer than 6–12 months without professional service can lead to poor cutting performance and increased wear.
In short: sharp shears cut effortlessly. If cutting requires effort, causes hand fatigue, pulls hair, or produces inconsistent results, your shears likely need sharpening or professional evaluation. If you’re unsure whether the issue is adjustment, sharpening, or repair, we’re happy to help diagnose the problem.
Most clipper blades are tested with the same test string used industry-wide in factories that produce clipper blades. Additionally, grooming shears are tested using rabbit fur, and beauty/barber shears are tested using a single layer of soaked Kleenex tissue, which is the most difficult and demonstrative test for shears across the sharpening industry.
We sharpen equipment using a variety of machinery and grits to achieve an edge that is appropriate for the variety of tools we handle, including a convexing flat hone, a clipper blade hone, a belt grinder, a bench grinder, and hand filing, among other methods.
Proper sharpening will only remove enough material to create a fresh cutting edge on any given blade. Extensive damage may require more material removal to restore a clean edge, but a blade in good condition can generally be sharpened many dozens of times before retirement.
Yes, single-bevel knives can be sharpened very similarly to standard knives, and most specialty knives can be sharpened without any additional charge.
Repair & Care
Proper blade maintenance is crucial. Please visit our Equipment Care article for an in-depth guide on caring for your blades between sharpenings.
Grooming scissors have an adjustable screw or tension knob, located in the pivot point where the blades connect. Hold your scissors in the closed position by one of the rings, then use your other hand to pull the opposite ring so the scissors are open in a perfect cross “+” shape. Let the ring go so the scissors can fall back to the closed position. If the scissors close about halfway up the blade or 2/3rds of the way up the blade, they are tensioned properly. If they don’t close enough, they’re too tight and need to be loosened. If they fall all the way closed then they are too loose.
Yes, most missing ridelines can be brought back. If the damage is significant enough, then a small repair fee will be added to compensate for the additional time it takes to recreate a rideline and retest the shear.
We’re able to repair most basic damage, but if we can’t get the equipment working properly then we do not charge or we will touch up again for free. Scissor repairs are generally a flat $4. Clipper blades with broken teeth may receive replacement parts added to the invoice, but parts are generally only replaced if the damage to the blade could cause harm to someone or a pet.
Hair shears are sharpened to an incredibly fine edge, so it is recommended to avoid cutting anything but hair with them and avoid any kind of blunt force whatsoever. In our shop, we take great care to remove the burr created during the sharpening process without rolling the edge over, and edges are carefully inspected and tested to ensure that any rolled edges or chips are removed to guarantee optimal performance.
Dryers & Clippers
Clippers commonly pull hair when the clipper blades are dull, improperly tensioned, or when internal drive components are worn. In most cases, the issue is not the clipper itself but the cutting blade. This is why a professional dog clipper sharpening service focuses on sharpening and correctly adjusting the clipper blades rather than the clipper housing.
Blades may also pull if the tension is too loose or too tight, or if the blade drive or drive lever is worn. For working professionals, drive components should typically be replaced about every three months, or sooner with heavy use. Having blades serviced by a professional using proper equipment and correct tensioning techniques restores smooth cutting and helps prevent pulling or snagging.
There is a lot of componentry between the wall outlet and the blade of the clipper that can wear down or break to cause the clippers to run intermittently or stop altogether. It could be a damaged or worn cord, a faulty motor armature, a bad switch, or a fried circuit board, among other things. Without taking the clipper apart, inspecting, and replacing suspected parts, it can be difficult or impossible to tell what specific part is causing issues.
If the dryer is more than 7-10 years old and the motor(s) is/are all damaged or faulty enough to warrant a full motor replacement, it may be time to consider replacing the dryer altogether. After a double motor replacement, service fee, and shipping costs, an old dryer is probably not worth salvaging.
Most issues that cause clippers to overheat or smoke can be repaired, but the cost might include a new motor, which can sometimes be more expensive than would be worthwhile. We recommend calling for advice on your particular situation to see if a repair or replacement would be best for you.
If the dryer runs but doesn’t blow air, it means the motor(s) is/are working, but the airflow is somehow physically blocked either along the hose, the outtake, or within the dryer itself. The motor must push air if it is running, so either the motor is trying to run but is not actually moving, or the airflow is blocked.
Oftentimes a dryer that smells of burning or is frequently overheating can be repaired, the source could be electrical or due to worn brushes, but could potentially indicate damage severe enough to warrant replacing the motor.
If the motors in your dryer are struggling to run smoothly due to worn brushes or other damaged parts, they may be louder than usual and could even vibrate or fail while running. If this happens, the dryer should be shut down immediately to prevent further damage, and will need to be opened up and inspected to determine the source of the noise, vibration, or other issue.
